Custom Slat Wall Panels with Integrated Flip Down Coat Hooks
At our shop we designed and made a clean and elegant system for making this slat wall panel. Using our digital fabrication process and CNC machines in compliment with our traditional shop tools to create this clean aesthetic. The slat walls will be installed to wrap the interior of the entryway and hallway of a residence.
For the slat wall panels that will be installed by the front door, we’ve designed some integrated flip down slats that will act as coat, hat and bag hooks for the entryway.
Assuring the slats align in the closed position, we designed and made a small brass fin imbedded in the backer panel that engages with the flip down slat. (that you can see in the video below) The custom brass fin is hidden behind the Rift Oak slat concealing the seam.
At our fabrication shop, we first picked and sorted the Rift Oak, choosing the best pieces, and then arranging them on the backer. Pre-fitting these on the backer before the glue up allowed us to create the best looking panel, as even in a Rift Oak, these slats are all a unique. The Oak slats in Rift cuts are not only strong and durable, but a beautiful clean aesthetic.
Using out digital fabrication techniques and CNC machines, we were able to design and fabricate these flip down components, embedding a long aluminum arm into the slat that gives the flip down motion. We then designed the seam of the cut curve to be as tight as possible, hiding the seam details with little disruption to the grain pattern.
The seams are tight and barely noticeable. The smooth motion of slat arm as it moves along the curved seam is gentle, sturdy and clean. These slat walls will be installed to wrap the walls and ceiling of the entryway and hallway of the residence. Now they are ready to go to the finisher for the final touch!
